Prospect Medical Holdings announced it would shutter its 208-bed Nix Medical Center, downtown San Antonio’s acute-care hospital. The Los Angeles owner indicated it would shutter the facility at 414 Navarro St. in October or November 2019, citing a decline in demand for acute-care services in the area. However, the provider’s two behavioral health service locations will remain open.
The closure will mean that as many as 585 employees will be laid off. Nix will also shut down its home health department, which employs 18. The first round of staff layoffs will begin Oct. 21.
In addition to the downtown medical center, Nix Health operates Nix Alamo Heights, a sleep clinic, and physician offices for its home health care program. Prospect acquired Nix Health in 2012, and in April 2019, began looking for a buyer for the downtown hospital and four affiliated medical facilities.
Connect Healthcare is coming up October 2 and 3, 2019 at The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Coast. More information about the event and registration details can be found here.
