Aecom Buying Shimmick Construction for $175M

Aecom is acquiring Oakland-based Shimmick Construction for $175 million to strengthen its civil construction capabilities in the Western U.S. Shimmick has secured a market-leading position as a heavy civil construction firm, and the addition will help solidify Aecom’s bid to capture more design-build infrastructure projects in California.

In addition to expected Federal infrastructure spending increases, Aecom hopes to secure work stemming from nearly $180 billion of recently-approved ballot measures. Those include Measure M in L.A., Measure RR in San Francisco, as well as a $52-billion road repair bill recently passed by the California legislature.

Shimmick has 1,000 employees, and a $1.35-billion project backlog that includes a wide portfolio of iconic infrastructure projects.  Those projects include San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, Long Beach’s Gerald Desmond Bridge Replacement, the E320 South Bellevue Extension in Seattle, Honolulu’s HART Airport Guideway and Stations design-build project, and San Diego’s Miramar Clearwell Improvements project.
