Aetna chose New York City over Boston for its corporate headquarters in an effort to tap into NYC’s “knowledge economy hub” and innovation drivers. The insurance giant plans to relocate to 61 Ninth Ave., a loft-inspired building in the Chelsea neighborhood in late 2018.
The company is taking 145,000 square feet in Vornado Realty Trust’s and Aurora Capital’s planned nine-story, 165,000-square-foot development at West 15th Street and Ninth Avenue. Starbucks leased the balance of the space for a cafe and roastery.
Aetna said it will relocate 250 jobs to NYC, while 6,000 employees will remain in Hartford, CT, the company’s home for 164 years. Aetna plans to invest $84 million in the space build-out.
The financial incentive package included $24 million in performance-based tax credits from the Empire State Development Corp., and a $9.6-million assistance package from the New York City Economic Development Corp.
