Austin is the 11th largest city in the United States. Its main airport, however, Austin-Bergstrom International, is ranked 34th in departures among other U.S. airports. This metric could be changing, however, as the airport is planning a large expansion over the next several years.
A $350 million, nine-gate expansion is scheduled for a spring 2019 opening. Additionally, ABIA has received the go-ahead from the Austin City Council to add an additional 32 gates. ABIA officials indicated that by 2030, the airport would have an additional 20 gates, excluding the nine that will open in spring.
Before gate expansion, however, AIBA’s Lyn Estabrook told Community Impact that infrastructure would need to be built up, such as improving the airport’s departure drop-off and terminal service areas. The first decade of work would expand check-in terminals, TSA gates and the baggage claim area.
