Amazon plans to open its second Amazon Books bookstore later this summer in San Diego. The dominant book retailer is “currently hiring store managers and associates” in preparation for its brick-and-mortar store debut at Westfield’s UTC mall.
The location is expected to sell Amazon’s books, as well as double as a showroom for its expanding brand. Shoppers could learn about Prime membership, and check out Amazon’s hardware lineup, which includes Kindle, Fire TV, Fire tablets and Echo.
The e-commerce giant may be experimenting with physical stores as smaller versions of distribution centers for quicker deliveries, pick-ups or returns. Seattle-based Amazon already operates a bookstore in its hometown at University Village, and reportedly may open as many as 400 locations.
