A secret team at Amazon called 1492 is working on technology related to healthcare, including electronic medical records and telemedicine. Headquartered in Seattle, the team is working on both hardware and software projects, according to unnamed sources. Amazon didn’t respond to requests for comment.
The 1492 team is trying to find a way to collect data from legacy EMR systems and make that information available to consumers and their healthcare providers. Additionally, Amazon plans to build a telemedicine platform to make it easier for physicians to treat patients, particularly those in underserved, rural areas.
Sources say team 1492 also has been tasked with identifying healthcare applications for Amazon’s existing hardware—Alexa, Echo, and Dash Wand.
Team 1492 isn’t Amazon’s only healthcare-related endeavor. It currently sells medical devices and supplies, and sources say it is evaluating opportunities to distribute prescription drugs. Moreover, Amazon’s cloud business, Amazon Web Services, brought on a group of health experts to compete against Microsoft and Google for contracts with large healthcare systems and pharmaceutical companies.
