Amazon hosted a national hiring day, and thousands of candidates showed up hoping to claim one of the 50,000 jobs the giant online retailer is seeking to fill. Amazon said it received a “record-breaking” 20,000 applications and hired thousands on the spot, with more new hires expected in the coming days.
Amazon typically ramps up staffing in August to get ready for the coming holiday shopping season. Though the size and urgency of this year’s hiring spree is distinct, and underscores the key role e-commerce now plays.
Most of the jobs are full-time positions in packing, sorting and shipping. Amazon says it plans to add 100,000 full-time employees by mid 2018.
The massive job fair took place at shipping sites in Washington, Massachusetts, Maryland, Tennessee, Ohio, Kentucky, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Illinois and Indiana, as well as off-site locations in New York and Oklahoma.
