On April 30, 2017, one of the last independent art supply stores in New York will vanish as A.I. Friedman, an 80-year old art supply store on West 18th Street, closes its doors.
Nowadays, artists tend to buy their art supplies online from vendors like Amazon, or from chain stores like Black. “We are one of the problems, but certainly not the only one,” said Black Chief Executive Bob Buchsbaum of his 65-store chain to the New York Post. “It’s a challenging time for all retail.”
Other independent art supply stores that shut down include Pearl Paint, which closed in 2014, and New York Central Art Supply and Lee’s Art Shop, which closed in 2016.
