Apple Plans $1B Nevada Data Center Expansion

Apple plans a $1-billion expansion of its massive data center east of Reno, NV, doubling its investment and roughly tripling its workforce at the technology campus in the Truckee River canyon.  Reno also approved a plan by Apple to build a $4-million shipping and receiving facility on a vacant lot in the city’s downtown area.

The data center expansion and addition of 100 employees is being driven by Apple’s soaring iCloud storage demands. Apple was Northern Nevada’s first major economic development coup, which helped put the region on the technology and innovation map.

Apple currently has more than 700 workers in Nevada, where the company’s largest solar investment powers its data center with clean energy. The five-year-old $1-billion data center is located in the Reno Technology Center, near the Tracy generating station along Interstate 80.
