Milwaukee’s Historic Preservation Commission approved plans to build a 14-story glass hotel tower on top of the Humphrey Scottish Rite Masonic Center at 790 N. Van Buren St. The project means the art deco building will be converted into a 230-key hotel, with the existing building preserved and open to the public as the hotel’s lobby, along with restaurants and a rooftop beer garden.
Ascendant Holdings LLC of Madison, WI expects to buy the building in late March, with construction beginning in October or November. The hotel would have an early 2019 scheduled opening.
Eric Nordeen, principal with Ascendant Holdings, first discussed the possible building conversion in May of last year. This took place after the Milwaukee Preservation Alliance requested city officials to designate the Masonic Center as an historic building.
