Officials at Southside Hospital in the Suffolk County hamlet of Bay Shore, within the Town of Islip, have unveiled plans to build a five-story employee parking garage and a new pavilion for private patient rooms. The pavilion would include 90 private rooms, four operating rooms and 48 pre- and post-operative holding rooms, Newsday reported.
The additional parking is as necessary as the additional patient capacity, executive director Donna Moravick told Newsday. “You can’t build any more beds unless you have the appropriate parking spaces,” she said. “Right now, there are 20 patients on a daily basis who do not have a bed.”
Hospital officials said they need to apply for a zoning change from the Town of Islip before any construction begins. Earlier this year, they demolished three administrative buildings to create 200 parking spaces as part of a $112-million redevelopment project.
