Belmont Redevelopment Will Include New LIRR Station

As part of the planned $1.26-billion redevelopment of the Belmont Park racetrack, the community of Elmont, NY on the Queens/Nassau County border will get the first full-time Long Island Rail Road train station in nearly 50 years.

The redevelopment will feature a 19,000-seat-arena that’s set to be the future home of the Islanders hockey team, along with a hotel and 350,000 square feet of retail, scaled back from 435,000 square feet based on community input.

“The Belmont Redevelopment project, buoyed by a new full-time LIRR station, is expected to have a significant economic impact and projected to generate nearly $50 million in annual public revenue,” said Lieutenant Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Constructing the new full-time station on the LIRR’s Main Line and upgrading the existing spur is estimated to cost $105 million. The Islanders ownership, which is developing the arena, will cover $97 million, or 92% of the total cost.
