With recent political rhetoric creating uncertainty about what, exactly, will come from President-Elect Donald Trump’s administration, hard, solid facts show that free trade across the border between Mexico and the United States have benefited both nations. Mexico is the third largest overall trading partner with the United States, with close to $1.5 billion of goods and $148 million of services traded between the two countries daily, according to data from CBRE.
Texas, especially benefits from trade with its neighbor to the south. In a recent CBRE “MarketFlash,” the Lone Star State’s trade with Mexico alone supports demand for up to 270 million square feet of industrial space in Texas. Additionally, Texas’ inland, air and sea ports handle 70% of total U.S. trade with Mexico; half of which has Texas as the origin or destination.
