Mercy Hospital, located at 2525 S. Michigan Ave. in Bronzeville, will close sometime between Feb. 1 and May 31 of next year, the Chicago Business Journal reported.
The decision follows an unsuccessful attempt in January by Mercy and three other South Side hospitals to form an independent health system that would have built up to two new hospitals.
“The decision to discontinue services at Mercy Hospital was not an easy one,” said Mercy Hospital president Carol Schneider. “But patients on the South Side have unmet needs within the current system. The transformation from an inpatient model to one with greater access to outpatient services will better address the disparate outcomes in health from which our community suffers today.”
Mercy Hospital officials said the hospital loses $4 million per month and that its aging facility would have required at least $100 million of additional capital investments in the next five years.
