Frank Tejeda was a U.S. Congressman who was dedicated to improving San Antonio’s south side, and was instrumental in creating Brooks Development Authority. The authority is in charge of developing Brooks, the 1,300-acre mixed-use project, which was once the site of the Brooks Air Force Base. To honor Tejeda, Brooks recently unveiled “Sun Mountain,” a metal sculpture created by Cruz Ortiz, an artist based in San Antonio.
Located at the corner of Aviation Landing and City Base Landing, Cruz’s vision in his work was to represent Frank Tejeda as a force of nature, who had a large impact on San Antonio. The sculpture also incorporates metal letters from a sign that stood at the entrance of the Tejada Sports Complex, on San Antonio’s south side. The sculpture’s tri-fold construction incorporates three large slits in the metal, which allows sunlight to pass through.
