Building Permits Drop, Year Over Year

City of Houston Building permits totaled $387 million in February 2017, representing a 16.8% drop from the $465.4 millionCOHPermits the year before, according to data released by Houston’s Department of Public Works & Engineering Planning & Development Services. Both commercial and residential construction recorded over-the-year losses in February.

Other metrics of note:

  • The value of non-residential building permits decreased 12.2% from $283.4 million in February 2016 to $248.8 million in February 2017.
  • Residential building permits fell 24% from $182 million to $138.3 million during the same period.
  • Though permits for single-family houses increased by 50.9% to $111.9 million, multifamily permits dropped 95.3% to $3.5 million.
