CHA Opens Third Co-located Library/Apartment Project

A new Chicago Public Library branch, part of a co-located housing and library development, has opened in West Ridge on the Far North Side. First announced in 2016, the Northtown Apartments and Northtown Branch were financed by the Chicago Housing Authority and Evergreen Real Estate Group. The apartments are slated to open later this year.

The co-located library and apartments at 6800 N. Western Ave. will provide 44 one-bedroom senior housing units, including 30 CHA and 14 affordable apartments. They replace the previous CPL branch at 6435 N. California Ave.

The Northtown development is the third such project to open, joining Independence Branch Library and Apartments at 4024 N. Elston Ave. and Little Italy Branch Library and Taylor Street Apartments at 1342 W.  Taylor St. Both opened earlier this year. In common with the other two, it was designed by a leading architecture firm, in this case, Perkins+Will.
