Plans leaked this week about a new downtown stadium for the Chargers. The NFL team is preparing a ballot initiative to finance the facility and expand the convention center.
The Chargers are reportedly proposing to increase the hotel room tax to 16.5 percent to help pay for the stadium and new convention center. Sources close to the discussions say the mayor and industry leaders haven’t jumped on board to support the measure yet, but weren’t officially opposing it either.
The team believes a recent appeals court decision may imply that the citizen-sponsored initiatives are not bound by the two-thirds rule for approving special tax increases.
