Chicago’s office market was named the greenest in the U.S. for the third consecutive year as the green building trend continues to expand in the nation’s largest cities, CBRE says. The Midwest city registered with 71.1% of its office space certified as green, up slightly from last year’s edition of the annual Green Building Adoption Index by CBRE, Maastricht University and the University of Guelph.

In terms of square footage, Manhattan—the nation’s largest office market at 407 million square feet—comes in ahead of Chicago with slightly more than 200 million square feet green-certified, compared to 167 million square feet in Chicago. However, Manhattan’s percentage is only enough to achieve seventh place in the national ranking.

Chicago also fared well in CBRE’s inaugural Multifamily Green Building Adoption Index. The city ranked fifth overall with 19,645 green-certified units, compared to 11,091 in 10th-place Manhattan and 8,123 in 13th-place Los Angeles.
