City officials and representatives of major healthcare organizations recently opened the New York Proton Center (NYPC) in East Harlem. New York City’s first proton therapy facility, the 140,000-square-foot facility will be operated by a consortium of three New York City-based health care institutions: Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Montefiore Health System and Mount Sinai Health System.

“The New York Proton Center is the first of its kind in New York State and will offer cutting-edge treatment to both adults and children battling cancer,” said City Council Member Diana Ayala. “Its presence in East Harlem will render the neighborhood home to advanced, innovative cancer treatment—all while contributing to the transformation and revitalization of East 125th Street.”

NYPC is a key component of the New York City Economic Development Corporation’s East 125th Street Development project, which will also include affordable housing along with commercial and retail space.
