Classical radio station KMFA 89.5 FM, broadcasting throughout the Austin metro, announced plans to acquire, and move into, a permanent studio in 2020. The 18,000-square-foot, free-standing building will be built in an as-yet unnamed mixed-use development on Lady Bird Lake in East Austin. Groundbreaking on the building will take place in July 2019.
The mixed-use development will be situated next to the Rebekah Baines Johnson Center on Waller Street, an independent living center for seniors and individuals with disabilities. The project will offer more housing for seniors, retail and office space, and market-rate apartments.
The new building, which will include a 140-seat event space, will be the first time the radio station has owned, rather than leased, its space. Southwest Strategies Group, one of several companies involved with the overall development, is working with KMFA on the building.
