Coming to East Harlem: Energy-Efficient, Affordable Apartments

A new building in the Bronx will be so energy efficient, it won’t need much heat on many cold days. Developers Jonathan Rose Cos., L+M Development Partners and several community partners won the right to build the 655-unit SustaiNYC, East 111th Street development partly by promising to build the largest property in the U.S. to meet “passive house” standards. Buildings operating under such standards require 60%-70% less energy than comparable, conventional buildings.

“We and our community partners are so pleased to have been selected to develop a comprehensive model of a community of opportunity in East Harlem, integrating green affordable and mixed-income housing, community based health care, superb education, senior services, recreation, community gardens, and neighborhood serving retail,” said Jonathan F.P. Rose, president of Jonathan Rose Cos.
