The Harris County Commissioners Court voted unanimously to move forward on a $105 million plan that will put the Houston Astrodome to use. Specifically, the commissioners approved $10.5 million toward a plan creating 1,400 underground parking spaces.
The proposed plan would also raise the Astrodome’s floor to ground level, leading to more than 500,000 square feet of rentable, air-conditioned space.
The project would be paid for by the Harris County general fund, hotel taxes and parking revenues. The Texas Historical Commission still must approve the plan, and construction wouldn’t begin until after the Super Bowl Takes place at the nearby NRG Stadium in February 2017.
