Construction Underway on Texas’ First Full Mass Timber Project

Ground broke on First United Bank, an 8,500-square-foot structure in Fredericksburg, TX. The unique aspect about this retail banking facility is that it will be the first mass-timber construction project to be completed in Texas, and the first nationally to use Southern Yellow Pine Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) panels. The facility is anticipated to open in July 2019.

Designed by Gensler, the project is being built with engineered wood, glued to make panels. These panels can be quickly installed on-site, with reduced construction time, traffic, noise and waste. The wood weighs less, is more resilient and has a reduced carbon footprint.

“The impact that construction has on the planet is extraordinary, and as designers, we are always seeking resilient strategies to be good stewards,” said Gensler’s Taylor Coleman. “We were lucky that our client, First United Bank, shared such strong values of community and responsible design, and is championing this game-changing project.”
