The Corpus Christi City Council recently $1.85 million in incentives for Next Sports Company (NSC) to build a sports complex near the Gabe Lozano Golf Course. The city said the incentives will leverage more than $15 million in private sector investment.
The facility would include eight multi-purpose fields to be used for soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, flag football and cheerleading. Also included would be a 5,000-seat soccer stadium that reportedly would serve as the home field for the Corpus Christi Sharks, a professional soccer club owned by NSC owner Kingsley Okonkwo.
Corpus Christi Business News reported that an estimated 50 full-time jobs will be needed to help organize what could be 25 youth tournaments annually. That kind of traffic is expected to fill 25,000 hotel rooms per year.
Phase I of the two-phase project should be completed in December 2021, with the second phase following a year later.
