The Texas Medical Center, situated on 1,345 acres in Houston, is billed as the world’s largest medical city. If Medical Center of the Americas has its way, it will re-create the size and scope of the Houston version in central El Paso, according to a 440-acre master plan unveiled by the healthcare corporation.
The plan focuses on building a framework stretching from Interstate 10 and Raynolds Street in the northeast to the El Paso Zoo in the southwest. It would also include the Evergreen Cemetery, adjacent to the University Medical Center at El Paso.
The core focuses on $83 million in improvements over a 140-acre area containing Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso Campus. MCA hopes that development of the health-district core will encourage private developers to bring in housing, restaurants and other commercial development.
The build-out of the entire project would take 50 years.
