Former Criminal Justice Building to Become Multifamily

A former criminal justice building in the TechTown neighborhood of Detroit is slated to become a 181-unit development, following a Wayne State University board vote. The board approved a development agreement, ground lease and purchase agreement for the building at 6001 Cass Ave., and part of the 220-space parking lot at 445 York St. The property is on the Wayne State University campus.

Developer The Platform LLC will convert the 147,000-square-foot building into 69 residential units. An additional 64 rental units and 48 condominiums would also be part of the project. The Platform plans to have the project, which will total 283,000 square feet, competed by 2019.

The building, designed by Albert Kahn, delivered in 1927. The Detroit Police Department used the building for criminal justice training. Cadillac was also a tenant at one point.
