CTA’s Red Line Extension Advances with Federal Approval

The Chicago Transit Authority recently received approval from the Federal Transit Administration to enter the New Starts Project Development phase of the FTA’s Capital Investment Grants Program (CIG) for the Red Line Extension (RLE) project on Chicago’s Far South Side.

The CIG program provides partial funding for transit capital investments like RLE. Federal transit law requires transit agencies seeking CIG funding to complete a series of steps over several years including project development.

“While this year has brought forth a tremendous amount of uncertainty, one thing that remains certain is CTA’s unwavering commitment to advancing the Red Line Extension project,” said CTA President Dorval R. Carter, Jr.

The CTA ‘s latest project timeline estimates the start of construction in 2025, and service beginning in 2029, all of which is dependent on securing project funding.
