New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo reportedly has been working behind the scenes in hopes of persuading Amazon to reconsider its abandonment of plans to build in New York City. However, publicly the governor acknowledged that “I have no reason to believe that Amazon is reconsidering.”
The New York Times (NYT) reported on Cuomo’s efforts, while also publishing an open letter from the Partnership for New York City to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. The letter, published as a full-page ad in the NYT, was signed by more than 70 unions, business leaders and elected officials.
“New Yorkers do not want to give up on the 25,000 permanent jobs, 11,000 union construction and maintenance jobs and $28 billion in new tax revenues that Amazon was prepared to bring to our state,” the letter reads. “A clear majority of New Yorkers support this project, and were disappointed by your decision not to proceed.”
