Decreasing Funds Put Amarillo’s Loop 335 in Peril

Amarillo’s $1 billion Loop 335 project, an effort to create an alternative route around the city for trucks to move freight and cargo, could end up in trouble due to decreasing state funds. The project’s future is undetermined at this point, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

The original idea of the loop was to provide relief to city traffic traveling via Interstates 40 and 27. The original plan indicated that Loop 335 would be completed in 10 years. However, Amarillo Mayor Paul Harpole said it could be another 30 years before the area sees a full loop conversion.

The decline in Proposition 1 funds means TxDOT is determining reallocation of its funding. Proposition 1 was approved by voters in 2014, and involves using oil and gas severance taxes toward transportation needs.
