Tesla is moving up pilot production of its Model 3 cars at its Fremont, CA factory. Suppliers were advised the company will begin test-building the car later this month in anticipation of meeting orders for the more than 370,000 vehicles on which customers already placed deposits.
CEO Elon Musk indicated last year the company planned to start building the cars in July 2017. The move to ramp up sooner could allay concerns about sticking to a timeline analysts and suppliers said was ambitious and tough to meet.
There’s considerable weight riding on the Model 3, which is priced at roughly $35,000 before government incentives. Tesla could rise above its position as a niche luxury auto maker if the Model 3 proves successful.
