Ford Invests $182M in Cloud Computing Platform

Ford invested $182 million into Pivotal, a Silicon Valley-based software company that is developing Pivotal Cloud Foundry, a rapidly growing modern cloud platform. The automaker seeks to gain access to cutting-edge technology that would take longer for it to develop on its own.

The move is in line with the growing number of alliances between automakers and tech companies as they accelerate jointly-developed autonomous vehicles, more advanced in-car entertainment and mobility services. Ford’s software engineers are skilled at creating software that manages and controls engines, transmissions, braking and other automotive hardware.

But, in order to advance software used by consumers in vehicles more quickly, the automaker will work side-by-side with Pivotal developers. Several joint development labs are being set up where engineers can work together and learn.
