Ford Will Invest $1B in Its Chicago Factories

Ford Motor Company said Thursday it would spend $1 billion to expand the capacity of its Chicago Assembly and Chicago Stamping facilities on the city’s South Side. The expansion, in advance of introducing three new SUVs later this year, will add 500 jobs, bringing total employment at the two facilities to 5,800.

The automaker will build an all-new body shop and paint shop at Chicago Assembly, and make major modifications to the final assembly area.  At Chicago Stamping, the company is adding all-new stamping lines in preparation for the 2020 Ford Explorer, Police Interceptor Utility and Lincoln Aviator.

“Ford’s commitment to add 500 jobs and infuse nearly a billion dollars into its Southeast Side assembly plant is a vote of confidence in our people and our future,” said mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Chicago Assembly is Ford’s longest continually operating vehicle assembly plant. The factory started producing the Model T in 1924.
