The Abilene, TX City Council will soon consider authorizing the sale of $9 million in certificates of obligation to renovate a former Kmart store on South First Street into a police station. Plans for the XX-square-foot building at 4565 S. First St. are a municipal court, a 9-1-1 emergency center, the water utility office and general storage. The project is anticipated to require 18-24 months to complete.
The Kmart store closed at the end of 2016.
The Abilene Police Department currently shares space with the Taylor County Sheriff’s office in the old Thornton’s Department Store at (get this). Though the building underwent renovations in the mid-1980s, it has structural and foundation issues, as well as groundwater seeping into the facility. Sheriff Ricky Bishop indicated that, if the police department relocates, he’d like to see the sheriff’s office moving, as well.
