New York State may soon offer free college tuition to local students at state colleges and universities.

“College is a mandatory step if you really want to be a success,” said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo as he announced his proposed “Excelsior Scholarship” program January 2 at LaGuardia College in Queens, N.Y.

If Cuomo’s proposal is passed by state lawmakers, any New York resident accepted to one of the state’s universities or community colleges will be eligible for free tuition starting this fall, provided their household income is not more than $100,000 a year in 2017, rising to $125,000 a year in 2019.
