Converting the Resorts World “racino” at Aqueduct Raceway into full-fledged gaming operations is among the proposals being floated for bringing casinos to New York City. Proponents of the idea for gaming in the city say it could bring hundreds of millions of dollars into state coffers, while creating thousands of jobs.
The New York Times reported that representatives from major gaming companies have been meeting with state lawmakers in Albany this week to gain support for locating up to three casinos within city limits. Currently, upstate casinos operate under an exclusivity guarantee that no downstate casinos can be built until at least 2023.
Although the heads of both the Assembly and Senate gaming committees endorse the idea, proponents of casino operation in New York City face an uphill battle, the Times reported. For one thing, they’ll need to persuade liberal lawmakers who see gaming as a regressive tax.
