Gemdale USA Corporation received unanimous approval from Seattle’s Design Review Board for 222 Dexter, a 31-story, 324-unit apartment tower in the South Lake Union neighborhood. The Shanghai-based developer bought the site at Thomas Street last summer for a reported $25.6 million. The proposed mixed-use project is slated to rise 290 feet, and includes 126 parking stalls and roughly 2,480 square feet of street level retail.
Hewitt Architecture’s podium and tower design concept for “Cloud Tower” is rooted in an idea that the tower operates at two scales and with two expressions. It responds to the streetscape at a human scale, while connecting with a larger, more distant context. That clear vision found favor with the board, as did the thoughtful use and detailing of enduring materials.
Once building permits are secured, the developer is targeting a groundbreaking in early 2021. The development marks Gemdale USA’s first project in the Seattle market.
