German Grocery Chain Targets League City

Discount grocery retailer Lidl is gearing up to enter Texas. Specifically, the Germany-headquartered company submitted plans to League City, TX for a 35,000-square-foot retail spot at S.H. 96 and Tuscan Lakes Boulevard.

Lidl is known mainly in Europe and Asia as a low-cost grocer that offers other products as well. Business Insider dubbed the chain as a cross between Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Trader Joe’s, offering discounts on everything from groceries and produce, to appliances, to clothes.

According to the Houston Business Journal , Lidl came to the U.S. in June 2015, where it set up its U.S. corporate headquarters in Arlington County, VA. The retailer also opened a regional headquarters and distribution center in Spotsylvania County, VA. Lidl told the HBJ that it wanted to open stores in Texas, but declined to name specific locations.
