Landover-based Giant Food has announced plans to expand its distribution warehouse in Jessup, MD, that serves all 163 of its grocery stores in Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia and Delaware.
The grocer will add 93,000 square feet to the industrial facility, which is a 23% increase in its footprint. Giant says that the expansion will create 30 new jobs. Construction on the expansion began in January and is slated to be completed this month. The expansion comes as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in grocery sales as people cook more meals at home.
The expansion will include a 20% increase in the number of docking doors at the facility as well as the addition of technology to manage high-capacity operations. Giant is the largest grocer in the D.C. metro area and employs approximately 20,000 people in the mid-Atlantic region.
