The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority is considering funding a viability study for a proposed eight-mile gondola line. The gondolas, if approved and developed, would run between the University of Texas campus and Slaughter Lane, above South First and Guadalupe Streets.
The urban gondola concept is the brainchild of Argodesign, which has named the transportation “The Wire.” The Wire would be a high-speed, detachable gondola system relying on towers and stations above the city’s roads. Estimated costs for building the system could range from $290 million-$600 million.
The Mobility Authority is interested in funding a $15,000 viability study to determine potential barriers to the project. The initial study would also lead to a more in-depth feasibility study, that could cost upwards of $1 million.
