Google Inks Deal for Entire 35-Story Downtown Austin Tower

Google Inc. has leased an under-construction high-rise on a tract of downtown Austin land known as Block 185, according to sources familiar with the deal. The Mountain View, CA-based tech firm declined to comment on the lease, but sources say the company will occupy all 35 stories of the project.

Developed by Trammell Crow, the class AA building offers 790,000 square feet of office space. It is the fourth and final parcel of the former Thomas C. Green Water Treatment Plant, and is located at the corner of West Cesar Chavez and Nueces streets. Google already occupies a 29-story high-rise called 500 W. 2nd St., on one of the other parcels.

The amount of space in Block 185 could potentially house roughly 5,000 people, experts say. As of this past August, Google had more than 800 employees in Austin.

“Google is a major player in our corporate community and an engaged community leader; we are pleased to see how they continue to grow,” said Charisse Bodisch of Austin’s Chamber of Commerce.

Designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects and STG Design, the building rising on Block 185 is scheduled for occupancy in the second quarter 2022. CBRE is handling the leasing for the high-rise.
