Google’s Parent Co. Looks To Build Entire Cities

Could Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, be the next big urban developer? Alphabet’s urban-technology focused subsidiary, Sidewalk Labs, envisions redeveloping entire cities from the ground up, and incorporating technology to make them more environmentally-friendly, efficient, and ultimately, safer.

Sidewalk Labs is reportedly in the process of putting together a proposal to present to top executives in Mountain View, CA in the coming weeks. The technology-infused “smart” cities would include residences, offices, and retail, and bring entirely new spaces to currently decaying cities.

While further details are scarce, it is certain that Sidewalk would seek autonomy from city regulations, therefore allowing these developments to ignore common regulations, such as parking and street design, that commonly plague developers.
