The Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) and more recently, the International Living Future Institute’s Living Building Challenge have provided guidelines to commercial real estate owners and developers to help make the real estate more sustainable, energy efficient and earth-friendly. The latest trend in building design is wellness.
Wellness is less definable by metrics. Though some wellness elements – such as particulates in the water or food available on-site – can be measured. But defining what makes one employee feel good and another not so great is a little more subjective.
The International WELL Building Institute’s Well Building Standard certification does seek to provide guidelines that focus on wellness issues in a building. The IWBS, in fact, is partnering with organizations including the American Institute of Architects, Cleveland Clinic, HKS and even certification programs such as LEED, to create healthy environments for occupants.
