Hines and McCaffery Interests plan to break ground Tuesday on the Orchard, a condominium building that will be the last residential component of Lincoln Common. The seven-story Orchard will rise on the east side of the triangular site, Crain’s Chicago Business reported.
Two 20-story rental apartment towers opened last month facing Lincoln Avenue, on the west side of a site that formerly held Children’s Memorial Hospital. The Orchard’s smaller size and frontage on Orchard Street, a quieter, more residential-scaled street than Lincoln, were designed “to make a comfortable, elegant fit” with that side of the old hospital site, McCaffery Interests’ Dan McCaffery told Crain’s.
Neighborhood groups had wanted the Orchard side of the development to complement the neighborhood, McCaffery said. “It made sense to do something there that is less intense than what we’re doing on Lincoln.” Orchard residents will have a pedestrian route to the project’s retail spaces.
