How Does California Stack Up on Startup Activity?

The five U.S. metro areas with the highest startup activity in the 2017 Kauffman Index of Startup Activity were Miami, Austin, Los Angeles, San Diego and Las Vegas. The report measures entrepreneurial output across the country, including new company formation, business density and growth rates.

Overall startup activity slightly increased in 2016, though slowed relative to the past three years of aggressive growth.

Miami traded places with Austin for the top spot. Los Angeles remained at No. 3, while San Diego climbed seven spots to No. 4. Las Vegas remained steady at No. 5, while San Antonio jumped from 14th last year to No. 6 in 2017. Rounding out the top 10 were New York (7), Phoenix (8), Houston (9) and Denver (10).

Other ranked California cities include Riverside (13), San Francisco (14), San Jose (16) and Sacramento (20).
