Initial Phase Opens on $375M Waterfront Project

A dual-branded, 400-unit, 19-story hotel opened its doors this week on San Diego’s downtown waterfront. The new Marriott SpringHill Suites/Residence Inn hotel properties are part of a $375-million redevelopment by San Diego-based Lankford & Associates and Atlanta-based Portman Holdings.

The 5.69-acre development site is on the former Lane Field baseball park that’s being transformed from a parking lot. The next phase of the development is expected to begin in a few months on the upscale, 400-room InterContinental Hotel.

The developer says the hotel serves as a “gorgeous front porch” on the waterfront that welcomes people, compared to the “sea of asphalt” that it replaces.
