John Hancock Plans 32-Story SoMa Residential Tower

A five-story office building owned by John Hancock Life Insurance Co. could be demolished, and replaced with a 32-story South of Market residential tower.

Preliminary application documents filed with the city reportedly detail plans for 330 residential units on the upper 31 stories, along with 8,000 square feet of ground floor retail space, parking for bikes and cars, and a loading area at 95 Hawthorne St. The tower would include a rooftop deck and terraces for the first two floors.

John Hancock is partnering with Trammell Crow on the design and development of the project. The 320-foot tower is expected to undergo Planning Dept. review by May.
