A distressed golf course in Rancho Cucamonga, CA could be redeveloped into a high-density, urban community that appeals to millennials, downsizing empty-nesters and retirees. Upland, CA-based Lewis Group of Companies is proposing a mixed-use project with residential, retail, commercial, recreation and community spaces.
The developer is acquiring the 160-acre site, currently home to Empire Lakes Golf Course, which is closing May 31. Lewis is seeking to build as many as 3,450 residential units, including a mix of for-sale and rentals. The company also plans to add 220,000 square feet of commercial uses.
Lewis’ proposed plan is being reviewed by the city planning commission, and the project would need a specific plan amendment for a zone change to proceed.
UPDATE: Following a five-hour meeting April 13th, the Planning Commission voted to postpone the decision on whether to approve Lewis’ plan.
