Lone Star Brewery Still on Tap, Despite Problems

NRP Group of Cleveland is still planning to build apartments at the Lone Star Brewery in San Antonio, even after a crucial partner pulled out of the $300 million project. CBL & Associates withdrew from a partnership with Aqualand Development in June 2017, after receiving an anonymous letter accusing Aqualand’s Mark Smith of serving time in federal prison and filing lawsuits against former business partners.

Aqualand owns the south-side parcel, which would include a boutique hotel, nearly 300,000 square feet of office and retail, and the apartments. NRP went under contract to acquire 2.5 acres in the complex along the Mission Ranch section of the River Walk, where it planned to build 250 apartment units.

Smith said he is still actively working with NRP, and is negotiating a contract with another developer to continue work on the property. The project was set to break ground this summer.
