The former Pacific and Reading cinema building, at Fifth Avenue and G Street in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, is being reborn as a Hollywood-inspired entertainment and restaurant venue. The Theatre Box redevelopment will include an upscale eight-screen theater, as well as a Landshark Bar & Grill by Jimmy Buffett and a Sugar Factory restaurant, lounge and candy store.
Elie Samaha, a film producer, and part owner of the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood (formerly Grauman’s), signed a 30-year lease with San Diego-based OliverMcMillan for the 73,000-square-foot building, a former 15-screen multiplex that closed last year. Theatre Box’s ground floor space will include 50 excess handprint and footprint panels from the original Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.
The project is slated to open by the end of 2017, and is envisioned as a venue for film festivals, Comic-Con screenings, and large celebrations. A 5,000-square-foot rooftop bar is expected to open in 2018.
